Records Management plays a vital role in ensuring an element of rationality in Government in planning/ scheduling its future activities. However, the records cannot be allowed to pile up so as to occupy more area than the maximum extent prescribed for it i.e. 10 % of the total area of an organizational space. In order to keep records within the manageable limit and to maintain it at a low cost, there has to be a regular system of review and weeding of records. Detailed instructions on the subject are available in the Manual on Office Procedure as well as in the CBI Administration Manual & CBI Crime Manual. During the period, 934 old files were destroyed in HO which had outlived their normal retention period. The branches are also required to follow the instructions on weeding out of old records.
